SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

Sorry that we can’t welcome you in person but a warm welcome if you’re joining us for the live-stream Service.

WORSHIP AT HOME

Morning Prayer

You may wish to light a candle and have some reflective music playing in the background.

The Lord is good, a strong refuge when trouble comes. God is close to those who trust in him.

                                                                                Nahum 1.7

Opening Sentences

O Lord, open our lips

and our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

Alleluia. Christ is risen.

He is risen indeed. Alleluia.

The night has passed, and the day lies open before us; let us pray with one heart and mind.

Pause for reflection as you offer the day to God.

As we rejoice in the gift of this new day, so may the light of your presence, O God, set our hearts on fire with love for you; now and for  ever. Amen.

Psalm 68.  1-10

1  Let God arise and let his enemies be scattered; let those that hate him flee before him.
2  As the smoke vanishes, so may they vanish away; as wax melts at the fire, so let the wicked perish at the presence of God.
3  But let the righteous be glad and rejoice before God; let them make merry with gladness.
4  Sing to God, sing praises to his name; exalt him who rides on the clouds. The Lord is his name; rejoice before him.
5  Father of the fatherless, defender of widows, God in his holy habitation!
6  God gives the solitary a home and brings forth prisoners to songs of welcome, but the rebellious inhabit a burning desert.
7  O God, when you went forth before your people, when you marched through the wilderness,
8  The earth shook and the heavens dropped down rain,
      at the presence of God, the Lord of Sinai, at the presence of God, the God of Israel.
9  You sent down a gracious rain, O God; you refreshed your inheritance when it was weary.
10  Your people came to dwell there; in your goodness, O God, you provide for the poor.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen.

Acts 1:6-14

When the apostles had come together, they asked him, ‘Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?’ He replied, ‘It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.’ When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. While he was going and they were gazing up towards heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. They said, ‘Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up towards heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.’

Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a sabbath day’s journey away. When they had entered the city, they went to the room upstairs where they were staying, Peter, and John, and James, and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of* James. All these were constantly devoting themselves to prayer, together with certain women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, as well as his brothers.

Hymn:  The Servant King

From heaven you came, helpless babe,
Entered our world, your glory veiled;
Not to be served, but to serve,
And give Your life that we might live.

This is our God, The Servant King,
He calls us now to follow Him,
To bring our lives as a daily offering
Of worship to The Servant King.

There in the garden of tears,
My heavy load he chose to bear;
His heart with sorrow was torn,
'Yet not My will but Yours, ' He said.

Come see His hands and His feet,
The scars that speak of sacrifice,
Hands that flung stars into space
To cruel nails surrendered.

So let us learn how to serve,
And in our lives enthrone Him;
Each other's needs to prefer,
For it is Christ we're serving.

John 17:1-11

After Jesus had spoken these words, he looked up to heaven and said, ‘Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son so that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all people, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I glorified you on earth by finishing the work that you gave me to do. So now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had in your presence before the world existed.

‘I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world. They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything you have given me is from you; for the words that you gave to me I have given to them, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. I am asking on their behalf; I am not asking on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those whom you gave me, because they are yours. All mine are yours, and yours are mine; and I have been glorified in them. And now I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one.

The Creed

Do you believe and trust in God the Father,

source of all being and life, the one for whom we exist?

I believe and trust in him.

Do you believe and trust in God the Son,

who took our human nature, died for us and rose again?

I believe and trust in him.

Do you believe and trust in God the Holy Spirit,

who gives life to the people of God

and makes Christ known in the world?

I believe and trust in him.

This is the faith of the Church.

This is our faith.

We believe and trust in one God,

Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Amen.

In the prayers which follow will you please respond

Let us pray to God,
who alone makes us dwell in safety:

For all who are affected by coronavirus,
through illness or isolation or anxiety,
that they may find relief and recovery:
Lord, hear us,
Lord, graciously hear us.

For those who are guiding our nation at this time,
and shaping national policies,
that they may make wise decisions:
Lord, hear us,
Lord, graciously hear us.

For doctors, nurses and medical researchers,
that through their skill and insights
many will be restored to health:
Lord, hear us,
Lord, graciously hear us.

For the vulnerable and the fearful,
for the gravely ill and the dying,
that they may know your comfort and peace:
Lord, hear us,
Lord, graciously hear us.

We commend ourselves, and all for whom we pray,
to the mercy and protection of God.
Merciful Father,
accept these prayers
for the sake of your Son,
our Saviour Jesus Christ.
Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

 Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Collect: O God the King of glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven:  we beseech you, leave us not comfortless, but send your Holy Spirit to strengthen us and exalt us to the place where our Saviour Christ is gone before, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen

The Conclusion

The Lord bless us, and preserve us from all evil, and keep us in eternal life.   Amen.

Let us bless the Lord.

Thanks be to God

 Let us go out in the peace of Christ. Alleluia, Alleluia.

Thanks be to God. Alleluia, alleluia.

Hymn:  Rejoice the Lord is King

 Rejoice! the Lord is King,

Your Lord and King adore;
Mortals, give thanks and sing,

And triumph evermore:

Lift up your heart, lift up your voice;
Rejoice, again I say, rejoice.

Jesus the Saviour reigns,

The God of truth and love;
When He had purged our stains,

He took His seat above:

His kingdom cannot fail;

He rules o'er earth and heaven;
The keys of death and hell

Are to our Jesus given:

He sits at God's right hand

Till all His foes submit,
And bow to His command,

And fall beneath His feet:

Rejoice in glorious hope:

Jesus the Judge shall come,
And take His servants up

To their eternal home:

We soon shall hear the archangel's voice;
The trump of God shall sound: rejoice!
